On one hand, the history of Toda-ha Buko-ryu is relatively straightforward.  For many hundreds of years, it was apparently the family style of the Suneya family, an isolated clan in the Chichibu area.  For this reason, there is a direct lineage from generation to generation.

On the other hand, we have very little biographical information regarding the first 13 generations of Toda-ha Buko-ryu, and in the earliest of them, we are not exactly clear how the ryu was passed on, and in what form.  This section, therefore, should be considered to be an ongoing project, which will be amended as new information arrives.  Nitta Suzuyo, the 19th generation headmaster of the school, did substantial research on her own, and much of the initial information here comes from her work.

This section of the website will give an over-view of the history of various teachers in the ryu, as well as any available information regarding larger events in the period in which they lived.
